LabSat proves the rumour the new iPhone4S receives GLONASS signals

Apple are usually very keen to promote the new features their latest product will include, running to the hill and shouting as loud as they can about how their latest device will revolutionise the market.

But, with the launch of the new iPhone4S, this time Apple missed a trick. Too concentrated on promoting how the phone’s revolutionary voice control feature will help users to get the most out of their new device, they forgot to mention that the new product will now also receive signals from the Russian GPS equivalent – GLONASS – and have a drastically improved positioning feature.

Only mentioned in the tech specs the day after its celebrated launch, the ability to connect to the new Russian global navigation system was nearly forgotten… but not by us!

As pioneers in the GPS simulation market and keen to integrate our systems with Apple’s OS technology, Racelogic thought it would be a good idea to highlight the new devices ability to pick up signal from the additional 24 satellites in the GLONASS network, by placing the iPhone4S under test. Connecting it to a LabSat and placing the device in an isolating metal enclosure, we then set about sending a GLONASS only RF signal to the phone to see the results.

The iPhone jumped straight to Taiwan where the simulation was started and tracked perfectly – proving beyond doubt that the new device now benefits from the ability to combine both GPS and GLONASS signal to drastically improve and accelerate the devices ability to provide it’s users with an exact location in many more areas.
